The Machine Automation, Perception and Learning (MAPLE) and Machine Intelligence and Neural Technologies (MINT) laboratories at Vanderbilt University, Computer Science Department, seek to fill a postdoctoral research assistant position in embedded systems and machine learning to work on developing tools to improve laparoscopic training. The prospective candidate will collaborate with Profs. Wu and Kolouri at the Department of Computer Science, as part of a multi-departmental, multi-institutional, and multinational team of researchers to build and deploy an eye-gaze and machine learning-enhanced surgical training simulator.

The Machine Automation, Perception and Learning (MAPLE) and Machine Intelligence and Neural Technologies (MINT) laboratories at Vanderbilt University, Computer Science Department, seek to fill a postdoctoral research assistant position in embedded systems and machine learning to work on developing tools to improve laparoscopic training. The prospective candidate will collaborate with Profs. Wu and Kolouri at the Department of Computer Science, as part of a multi-departmental, multi-institutional, and multinational team of researchers to build and deploy an eye-gaze and machine learning-enhanced surgical training simulator.

We seek a highly motivated candidate with strong expertise in embedded systems, machine learning, and a passion for improving healthcare. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, or related disciplines. We are looking for the following skills:

- Be creative and able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary group with physicians and engineers.
- Having proven experience with scientific programming with Python (with PyTorch or TensorFlow) is mandatory.
- Experience with electronics prototyping is highly desired
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to multitask are essential.
- Interest in medically oriented embedded systems and machine learning

The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers in a rapidly evolving project and ensure the timely completion of the project’s milestones. 

The appointment starts in March 2023 and is for one academic year. Extensions are possible but contingent on the availability of funds, satisfactory performance in carrying out the assigned duties, and mutual agreement.
