The Nanoscale Optics and Materials Laboratory at Vanderbilt University seeks an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to work on projects focused on using metasurfaces and meta-optics as optical front-ends for digital image processing systems. The overarching goal of this work is to off-load computationally expensive operations into ultrafast and highly parallel optical front-end systems while also co-optimizing the digital back-end for various image processing tasks.

The Nanoscale Optics and Materials Laboratory at Vanderbilt University seeks an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to work on projects focused on using metasurfaces and meta-optics as optical front-ends for digital image processing systems. The overarching goal of this work is to off-load computationally expensive operations into ultrafast and highly parallel optical front-end systems while also co-optimizing the digital back-end for various image processing tasks.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and collaborative candidate with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, physics, materials science, optical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Previous experience in one or more of the following technical areas is required: nanophotonic materials, metamaterials and metasurfaces, inverse design of electromagnetic materials, implementation of machine learning algorithms, nanofabrication, optical spectroscopy, characterization of imaging systems. Must possess strong interpersonal and collaboration skills and the ability to contribute in a multidisciplinary team setting. Excellent oral and written communication skills required, as is the ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment. 

We offer a creative and collaborative environment with several opportunities of communicating results to the scientific community through publications and presentations as well as mentoring students. The successful candidate will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment, spend their time the Nanoscale Optics and Materials Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Jason Valentine and must be interested and motivated to learn techniques from a wide range of fields. Flexibility to pursue research in areas of interest, to apply for grants and fellowships, and to develop independent research directions is encouraged.
