The Vanderbilt University Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher, ideally with expertise in STEM Education and Higher Education (or other social science field) to assist with the data collection, analysis, and dissemination of research on “Professoriate Bound,” an online coaching program that we designed for Black engineering and computing doctoral students across the country who are interested in academic careers.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

The Vanderbilt University Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher, ideally with expertise in STEM Education and Higher Education (or other social science field).  The postdoc will be hired and supported to assist with the data collection, analysis, and dissemination of research on “Professoriate Bound,” an online coaching program that we designed for Black engineering and computing doctoral students across the country who are interested in academic careers. It is a federally funded program, and we will soon begin the second cycle of the program. You will work within a larger research group called Explorations in Diversifying Engineering Faculty Initiative (EDEFI, pronounced “edify”). The Postdoctoral Researcher will work directly with the Principal Investigators (PIs) Dr. William H. Robinson and Dr. Ebony O. McGee and hired graduate students in their research team. The postdoc will: 
• oversee the recruitment process for the second cohort of participants, 
• collect data (e.g., via surveys and interviews) to determine the efficacy of the program, analyze data. 
• prepare publications and presentations (under the direction of the PIs and in collaboration with doctoral students of the PIs). 
• write conference proposals and attend conferences to present research
• manage Institutional Review Board tasks related to the project 
• complete National Science Foundation reports
• assist in writing funding proposals

Career Counseling The Postdoctoral Researcher will gain the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to excel in his/her chosen career path. In addition to guidance provided by both PIs, the Postdoctoral Researcher will be encouraged to discuss career options with Vanderbilt University Graduate School. In PIs will meet with the Postdoctoral Researcher to discuss job application preparation (for academic or non-academic jobs) based on career goals. 

Teaching and Mentoring Skills will be developed in the context of regular meetings within the research group. During these meetings, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers describe their work to colleagues within the group and assist each other with solutions to challenging research problems, often resulting in cross-fertilization of ideas. 

Instruction in Professional Practices will be provided on a regular basis in the context of the research work and will include fundamentals of the scientific method and other standards of professional practice. In addition, the Postdoctoral Researcher will be encouraged to affiliate with one or more professional societies in his/her chosen field. The PIs will facilitate travel to relevant academic conferences to foster expansion of knowledge and to network with prominent professionals in the field. 

Salary is $50-$60k, depending on experience.

Position begins after August 1 or ASAP.
