Center for Science Outreach / Department of Teaching and Learning

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION at Vanderbilt University beginning July 1, 2019.

This position involves participation in the Interdisciplinary Science and Research and/or Resident Scientist Programs (ISR/RS) in the Vanderbilt Center for Science Outreach (CSO) in partnership with Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). The ISR program offers high school students a four-year, interdisciplinary, research-centered learning experience as a course of study in three high schools in MNPS. Students learn through a unique curriculum that connects the different STEM disciplines through problem-based learning. The program partners a postdoctoral fellow with an MNPS teacher to collaboratively teach the problem-based curriculum. The RS program partners a scientist with a middle school to enhance the teaching and learning of STEM across the middle grades.

The postdoctoral fellow will work with the CSO Director, Dr. Jennifer Ufnar, and other CSO staff to bring his or her STEM expertise to a unique, multidisciplinary team. The Director will encourage the fellow to develop instructional units, guide student research projects, obtain external support through grants and other funding mechanisms, and prepare publications that build on his or her research expertise in the context of an evolving interdisciplinary STEM curriculum. The postdoctoral fellow may also contribute to the expansion and replication of the ISR/RS program model to other schools and districts.

Applicants should have an earned doctorate in science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field, with significant experience in research and experimental design. The position will be initially for one year, with the possibility of yearly extensions subject to satisfactory performance. The salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and qualifications. Review of applications will begin immediately, and will continue until the position is filled.

Vanderbilt University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution committed to cultural diversity and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities act.
