Projects available in the program: Investigating human islet α function using a novel glucagon-less mouse model. Defining the role of the human MAFA and MAFB transcription factors in human α and β cell development and function. Examining how islet-enriched transcriptional coregulators impact human islet cells.

The Stein program has successfully trained many postdoctoral fellows who are now in tenure track positions, most recently Drs. Chad Hunter (at University of Alabama, Birmingham), Holly Hunter (Marshall University Medical Center), and Jason Spaeth (Indiana University - Purdue University Medical Center).
Our pancreatic development and islet biology programs are recognized internationally for outstanding research and training. They are broad in scope and highly interdisciplinary, with a strong collaborative history involving premier investigators within the USA and internationally. Moreover, the NIH funded Diabetes Center at Vanderbilt University has over 75 faculty engaged in basic research, clinical research and education in diabetes. An additional feature is the opportunity to interact with a dozen other pancreatic/islet biology laboratories here, which meets bimonthly to discuss research findings. We are specifically seeking candidates for the following projects:
Successful candidates will have a solid background in cell/molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or cell physiology, be capable of independently motivated discovery research and project design, and possess excellent analytical, organizational, and oral/written communication skills. Candidates must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D., and preferably a minimum of two first-author peer-reviewed publications and confidential references that indicate a strong history of teamwork and interpersonal skills.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience and generally according to the current NIH scale.
