Position Detail

The Department of Teaching and Learning (DTL) at Peabody College at Vanderbilt seeks candidates interested in pursuing post-doctoral study (3-years) in association with the Fisk-Vanderbilt Regional Center of Excellence. Centers of Excellence support recruitment and retention of minority undergraduate and graduate students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Teaching and Learning

The Fisk-Vanderbilt Regional Center is a continuation of an ongoing relationship between Vanderbilt University and Fisk University. The Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s to PhD Bridge Program (FVBP) was created in 2004 with the mission of increasing underrepresented groups in STEM. After 14 years we have built a family of scholars who are committed to mentoring one another and are doing world-class research. The students are a diverse group; of the 137 students enrolled to date approximately 57% are African-American, 23% Hispanic, 5% Native American or Pacific Islander, and 15% are white or other. 54% of the students are women. Over 90% are from traditionally underserved populations, first generation, low-income, or have physical or learning disabilities. We have and continue to accomplish our primary goal of finding and cultivating scientific talent from those overlooked by traditional means and metrics.

We are a national model for graduate education and are frequently consulted and cited on best practices for admissions and retention. The current toolkit contains, literature based forms, rubrics, time-lines and admissions protocols. We aim to help practitioners better understand the literature and be able to adapt and adopt these tools based on theory. 

The post-doctoral fellow will be the primary lead for building on the center’s current publicly available toolkit with the objective of creating a more comprehensive guide detailing the theory and research underlying those tools. He or she will also be responsible for presenting at the culminating workshop as well as preparing a workshop summary. Travel is requested for attendance at any required Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation meetings and for a least one other meeting such as the Understanding Interventions that promote Broadening Participation Conference, The American Physics Society Minority Bridge Program Meeting or the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Latinxs and Native Americans in Science. 

The postdoc will also work on data collection tools and participate in research centered on the program itself. The research, led by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) investigates the connections between admissions and outcome and how the program mentoring approach and structure impacts students. The workshop will focus presentation of theory based best practices, finding from project research, generating strategic plans for increased admission, retention and promotion of underrepresented groups in STEM and provide opportunities for connections between educational researchers and practitioners. 

Applicants must have completed their PhD in a relevant education discipline prior to August 31, 2018 and have academic research experience in public policy, economics, education, quantitative methodology, or other similar fields. Applicants should also have a substantive interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), or the connection between educational trainings and STEM trajectories. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
