Position Detail

Research in a multiply-funded, multidisciplinary program to investigate the origin and progression of precancerous metaplasia in the stomach. Research is focused on questions of identity and function of pre-cancerous stem cells and the relationship of intrinsic and extrinsic immune cells as well as stromal cells to influence their progressive intestinalization and evolution to cancer.

Projects available:
• Characterization of metaplastic organoids from both mouse models and humans.
• Single cell analysis of stem cell populations with metaplastic populations.
• Evaluation of MEK inhibitor treatment on the behavior of normal and metaplastic stem cell populations.
• Evaluation of markers of metaplastic progression towards cancer.
• Investigation of intracellular regulators of chief cell transdifferentiation into metaplasia.
• Evaluation of the role of intrinsic immune cell populations in the stomach in induction and progression of metaplasia.

These studies include a range of cell biological techniques including 3-dimensional organoid culture, live cell microscopy, confocal fluorescence microscopy, single cell RNA sequencing, and multiplex fluorescence imaging and analysis.
