Position Detail

Postdoctoral position in theoretical / computational biology.

Physics and Astronomy

Position Type: Postdoctoral Fellow
Start Date: 2018 (Negotiable, Spring or Summer)
Faculty Advisor: Dr. William R. Holmes

Position Description:
The Holmes lab at Vanderbilt is looking for a talented and motivated mathematician, physicist, or quantitative scientist with experience with mathematical modelling, analysis, and simulation of spatial and / or stochastic systems. This fellow would work in a collaborative group on a number of projects, most centrally on a project to quantify the robustness, evolution, and design of complex spatially signaling regulatory networks. The goal of this project is to develop new mathematical and computational tools to assess the properties of complex spatial signaling systems that regulate cellular functions and investigate the general design principles of those systems.

While this search is primarily associated with this project, Vanderbilt has a large, vibrant biomedical sciences community with ample opportunities for new collaborations and projects. Additional positions are possible and exceptional candidates are encouraged to apply. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply, including women, African Americans, Hispanics and other minorities.

Qualifications:
Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline. The following skills are strongly desired.

REQUIRED
1) A PhD in mathematics, physics, or related discipline with an applied mathematics / computing background.
2) Experience with numerical simulation of ODE’s / PDE’s (preferably in Matlab, though not required).
3) Analysis of spatial pattern formation.

DESIRED
1) A background in mathematical biology, quantitive biology, biophysics, or related work.
2) Experience with bifurcation analysis of systems of ODE’s and / or PDE’s.

Additional Information: The appointment can start as early as Winter 2018. The appointment is for one-year. Renewal for a second year is contingent on availability of funds, satisfactory performance, acceptable progress in carrying out the assigned duties, and mutual agreement. Salary is commensurate with experience.

To Apply: Please submit a cover letter including a brief statement of career goals, curriculum vitae, one example publication / manuscript, and contact information of three references. Apply to Dr. William Holmes (william.holmes@vanderbilt.edu). Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Holmes directly expressing interest while formal application materials are compiled.
