Position Detail

Postdoctoral Fellow. The start date is negotiable. The appointment can start as early as Winter 2017 and is initially for one-year. Renewal for subsequent years is contingent on satisfactory performance, acceptable progress in carrying out the assigned duties, availability of funds, and mutual agreement. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Physics and Astronomy

The Theoretical Biophysics Lab led by Dr. William Holmes at Vanderbilt is looking for a talented and motivated quantitative scientist with experience in mathematical modeling and simulation of spatial and / or stochastic systems. This fellow would work in a collaborative group on a number of projects, most centrally, an NSF funded investigation of early mammalian embryonic development. The goal of this project is to use modeling to understand how stochasticity propagates in gene regulatory networks, how that noise influences spatial organization of the early embryo, and more generally how different developmental processes contribute to the construction of the first discernable structures in the pre-implantation embryo.

While this search is primarily associated with this project, additional positions are possible and exceptional candidates are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications: Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline. The following skills are sought.

1) Experience with numerical simulation (preferably in Matlab, though not required).

2) Experience working with ordinary and partial differential equations.

3) Familiarity with stochastic simulation.

1) Experience with PDE simulation, particularly with a focus on calculating “Landscapes” for gene regulatory networks.

2) Stochastic simulation (SSA and related methods).

3) Spatial stochastic modeling using methods such as the sub-cellular element model or the cellular potts model.

To Apply: Please submit a cover letter including a brief statement of career goals, past research, and why you are interested in this position. Additionally, please send a curriculum vitae and one example publication / manuscript. In your cover letter, list the name of three references. If you are short listed, I will ask that letters be provided. Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Holmes ( directly expressing interest while formal application materials are being compiled.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply, including women, African Americans, Hispanics and other minorities.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
