Residential Colleges Returning Resident Process

Eligibility

Please be sure to review the Residential Colleges General Information section.

In order to participate in the returning resident process for their respective college, students must complete the Housing Registration between January 10 and January 14, 2022. Any eligible student who participates in the returning resident process is guaranteed a space in their college for the 2022-2023 academic year.

For the 2022-2023 academic year, returning resident priority will be honored for students who first took occupancy of their residential college during the fall 2020 semester or earlier including:

  • Students currently enrolled in courses at Vanderbilt who are residing in a residential college for the spring 2022 semester as of February 9, 2022
  • Students not currently enrolled in courses at Vanderbilt for spring 2022 semester, which includes those participating in spring study abroad, out-of-town internships, or on a leave of absence, whose last housing assignment was in a residential college

Students residing off campus for the 2021-2022 academic year who were previous residential college residents are not eligible to participate in the Residential Colleges Returning Resident Process.

Per information provided in the 2021-2022 Guide to the Housing Assignment Process, students who first took occupancy in a residential college during the current (2021-2022) academic year do not have returning resident priority.

NOTE: Participation in the Residential Colleges Returning Resident Process does not guarantee a particular room type. Depending on space availability, students may be assigned to group living accommodations (doubles and suites) with random roommates from their college.

Residential Colleges Returning Resident Process Application (Opens February 9, 2022)

Any eligible student who wishes to participate in the Residential Colleges Returning Resident Process must complete their respective Returner Application in the Housing Portal between February 9 at 12 a.m. CDT and February 11, 2022 at 6 p.m. CDT. Students applying as individuals for single rooms only need to complete their respective Returner Application in order to be eligible for the random selection.

For the Residential Colleges Returning Resident Process, students will be permitted to form roommate/hallmate groups of up to six (6) students for Warren and Moore Colleges, and groups of up to four (4) students for E. Bronson Ingram and Nicholas S. Zeppos Colleges in order to pursue doubles/suites or the ability to select single rooms at the same selection time. Forming a roommate/hallmate group will run concurrently with the Returner Application. Forming a roommate/hallmate group links students together for the random selection and enables them to select rooms as a group.

Upon completion of the Returner Application, students will be able to form a roommate/hallmate group with other applicants from their college. Students who do not submit a Returner Application will not be able to request roommates/hallmates or be requested as a roommate/hallmate. All roommate/hallmate groups must be formed by February 11, 2022 at 6 p.m. CDT.

Steps for Forming Roommate/Hallmate Groups:

  1. Log into the Housing Portal.
  2. Click on “Roommate Selection”.
  3. Click “Select Roommates”.
  4. Select “Fall 2022” as the term from the dropdown menu.
  5. If any other student/s have already requested you as a roommate/hallmate, the requests will show under “Pending Roommate Requests”. To accept requests, click on the three dots to the left of their name and select the “Match” icon.
  6. To request a student, click on “Search for Roommate”. Students are encouraged to search by VUnetID.
  7. Confirm that all members of your roommate/hallmate group accept/request the student/s they would like in their group under “Roommate Requests.”

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED A FULLY MATCHED ROOMMATE/HALLMATE GROUP, ALL MEMBERS OF THE GROUP MUST EITHER REQUEST ONE ANOTHER OR ACCEPT ANY PENDING REQUESTS FROM OTHER GROUP MEMBERS. NO EMAILS OR COMMUNICATION REGARDING ROOMMATES/HALLMATES WILL BE SENT TO STUDENTS FROM THE OFFICE OF HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS. STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COORDINATING WITH ONE ANOTHER TO ENSURE GROUPS ARE PROPERLY FORMED. UNMATCHED ROOMMATE/HALLMATE GROUPS WILL BE CONSIDERED AS INDIVIDUALS FOR THE RANDOM SELECTION.

Residential Colleges Returning Resident Process Results (February 14, 2022 at 6 p.m. CDT)

A seniority-driven, random selection utilizing the point average of all individuals/groups will be conducted to determine the order for room selection. Individuals/groups with higher point averages will select spaces prior to individuals/groups with lower point averages. Ties in point average are broken via random selection. Students will be contacted via email on February 14, 2022 with a room selection time and information on completing the online room selection.

Residential Colleges Returning Resident Process: Room Selection (February 15, 2022)

Room selection will take place online on February 15, 2022. Individuals and groups with selection times will be able to log into room selection 15 minutes prior to the start of the room selection to view an inventory of available rooms. Room selections cannot be made until the individual/group scheduled selection time. For roommate/hallmate groups of two or more, please designate one member of your group to complete the room selection even if you plan to select multiple rooms or a variety of room types.

NOTE: If more than one member of a roommate/ hallmate group attempts to complete the online room selection, your room selection will not process.

Once logged into room selection, students can choose from any available space. Students will be able to filter available rooms based on room type and floor. For roommate/hallmate groups of two or more, please be advised that in order to select a space, you must fill the room and/or suite. For example, a roommate/hallmate group of two students must either select one double room or two single rooms. The group cannot split in a way in which one student could take one space in a double and the other student take a single room.

Once you submit your room selection, changes are not permitted and your selected space will be your assignment for the 2022-2023 academic year. If individuals/groups do not find a room that they wish to select, they can leave the online selection without selecting a space and participate in future processes without penalty. This will result in a forfeit of a guaranteed space in a residential college.
