A letter from the Senior Directors of the Office of Housing and Residential Experience
On behalf of the Office of Housing and Residential Experience, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Vanderbilt University.
You are embarking on an incredible time in your life and beginning the process of making lifelong friends. There is much to look forward to as you begin your Vanderbilt experience. To help facilitate this, you will live with your classmates in the Martha Rivers Ingram Commons.
We in the Office of Housing and Residential Experience (OHARE) are here to assist you on that journey. You will have a Head Resident (HR) or Resident Adviser (RA) on your floor who is here to help connect you to all that Vanderbilt has to offer. Get to know your RA and HR. They are some of the best leaders on campus and all of them were chosen because they are great role models for you to look up to and excellent sources of information to help you get the most from your Vanderbilt experience. One way in which they do that is to engage in meaningful conversations with you to pass along advice and wisdom they have learned through training and from their experiences in life both before and during their time at Vanderbilt.
Full-time professional staff members (Area Coordinators) who live on campus supervise each HR/RA. Each residential area also has an Area Maintenance Supervisor (AMS) responsible for managing your maintenance requests. A Residential Experience professional is on duty at all times if you should need our assistance.
We will work closely with your Faculty Head to provide programs that will be challenging, educational, and fun. Attending House programs is a great way to meet all the other students living in your House.
You might consider getting more involved by seeking a position in the House Advisory Council. This can provide you an opportunity to amplify your voice in what happens in your community and develop your leadership skills.
To stay informed of up to date information from OHARE, you can visit our website at www.vanderbilt.edu/ohare. Once there, you can like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram.
Finally, as you undertake this new phase in your life, never forget to take time to enjoy the journey. We are often driven by the destination and forget to take the time to enjoy and reflect upon the journey. This is where you will find the joy. Take the opportunity to make new friends who bring something new and different into your life.
Again, welcome to Vanderbilt and to OHARE. Our offices are in Branscomb Quadrangle. Stop by if we can be of any assistance to you.
