Access campus using 20th St. entrance; 21st St. campus entrance closed

Based on information available as of Friday, March 6, this update outlines planned construction activity on campus from Monday, March 9, through Sunday, March 15, weather permitting.

At a glance: This week’s key community impacts

  • Parking on 21st St. will remain impacted. Parking on 20th is expected to be impacted this week as well; timing is not confirmed yet. If necessary, a time-sensitive update will be shared with those enrolled in Anchor Alert text notifications.
  • The 21st St. campus entrance will close on Monday, March 9. Community members will utilize the 20th St. entrance (429 W. 20th St., New York, New York 10011) to access campus.
  • Walkway access is impacted by fencing required for stormwater installation within The Close; access impacts will be similar to last week, with walkways shared with workers. The development of a temporary walkway within The Close is in progress.
  • Seabury renovation is in progress. The community may notice moderate noise levels in general, with noise louder than previously, due to roof abatement activity. The community may also notice more traffic nearby and visual changes with windows.
  • Interior renovation work in Keller is in progress this week; those nearby can expect moderate noise levels.

In general:

  • The community can continue to expect ongoing worker presence during weekday work hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
  • Trucks are expected to pick up excess materials up to three times this week, split between 20th and 21st, with estimated maximum impacts of two hours per pickup. Impacts will be similar to deliveries in prior weeks; when necessary, flaggers will direct traffic, and parking spots may be used.
  • Parking on 21st St. continues to be impacted with barricade installations; 20th St. parking is expected to be impacted at some point this week for installation of a ramp. Once available, details will be shared with those enrolled in Anchor Alert text notifications.
  • Optical monitoring is expected to begin this week and happen twice a week for the next two months. Workers will be outside and around campus surveying; no cameras or photos will be used in this process.
  • Temporary staging of construction materials and storage sheds remains on the lawn areas of The Close.

Vanderbilt-NYC 21st Entrance Closed
  • Noise impact: Moderate noise levels, with work expected to be louder with periodic busting of concrete.
  • Spatial impact: The 21st St. campus entrance closes on Monday, March 9. Community members will utilize the 20th St. entrance (429 W. 20th St., New York, New York 10011) to access campus. Equipment to support this work will be stored in the area.
  • FYI: A plywood fence/gate will be built behind the original gate to secure campus access, and then the original gate will be removed.

Fencing remains on The Close to allow for stormwater installation; development of a temporary walkway is in progress.

  • Noise impact: Moderate noise levels
  • Spatial impact: Walkway access is impacted by the fencing needed for stormwater installation within The Close; access impacts will be similar to last week. The development of a temporary walkway is in progress.
  • FYI: This fencing allows for the safe installation of stormwater infrastructure, which will help manage rainwater and prevent flooding and erosion on campus.

Seabury renovation, including window removal and asbestos abatement on the roof, is in progress.

  • Noise impact: Moderate noise with renovation work, slightly louder with roof abatement activity.
  • Spatial impact: Windows will be removed; temporary placeholders will be installed. Plywood will be added to the windows. Replacement windows will be installed later in the renovation process.

Scaffolding and sidewalk bridge installation continue along the interior of The Close.

  • Noise impact: Moderate noise
  • FYI: This part of the project is expected to be completed this month and will allow for further restoration and renovation work. Impacts are not expected to differ from prior weeks. With this work, residents can expect intermittent work at eye level near windows.

Abatement work in progress in Lorillard, White and Edson.

  • Noise impact: Moderate noise levels
  • FYI: The construction team will follow all state and federal regulations to ensure asbestos is safely removed with no safety threat to the community. An environmental consultant will be on site to manage air monitoring, and a certified environmental vendor will do remediation of hazardous material. No significant impact on the community is expected this week.

Keller renovation work is expected this week.

  • Noise impact: Moderate noise with the strongest impact on residents of The Enclave, particularly in Keller.
  • FYI: Crews will use dust mitigation measures during the renovation process, and accessible areas will be mopped daily.

Other campus impacts this week

Small private meetings and events are scheduled on campus Monday through Friday this week. Most will take place during daytime hours with minimal impact on the community. Evening programs are planned for Tuesday and Wednesday, when community members may notice slightly increased foot traffic.

Fire alarm system update

The construction team has worked to mitigate the recent fire alarm activations. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
