Aimi Hamraie is assistant professor of Medicine, Health, and Society and American Studies, and director of the Mapping Access Project at Vanderbilt University. Hamraie’s interdisciplinary scholarship bridges critical disability, race, and feminist studies, architectural history, and science and technology studies. Their publications include Building Access: Universal Design, Disability, and the Politics of Knowing-Making (forthcoming from the University of Minnesota Press, 2017) and articles in Design and Culture, Disability Studies Quarterly, Foucault Studies, Hypatia: journal of feminist philosophy, philoSOPHIA, Age Culture Humanities, Disability Space Architecture, and The Politics of Place and Space: Exclusions, Resistance, Alternatives.
As an instructor, Hamraie brings techniques from humanistic and design education into the classroom, incorporating environmental audits, sketching, and iterative design charrettes alongside critical theory and history into the study of disability and design. Hamraie has also innovated classroom participation through the use of technologies, such as Twitter, in a commitment to the principles of Universal Design for Learning. Hamraie’s courses include MHS 242: Bionic Bodies, Cyborg Cultures, MHS 248: Medical Humanities, MHS 290: Theories of the Body, MHS 290: Public Health and the Built Environment, and MHS 300: Introduction to Graduate Study in Medicine, Health, & Society.

Mapping Access is a participatory mapping, data collection, and Crip technoscience project that draws upon principles of Disability Justice, Intersectionality, and spatial practice to explore mapping as a tool for social justice.
Public Bodies, Healthy Spaces draws upon ethnographic data conducted in contemporary Nashville, Tennessee to study the politics of urban design interventions for public health.
