Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES)

Instrument location: Jacobs Hall 157

Civil and Environmental Engineering Department

Agilent 5110

The Agilent 5110 inductively-coupled plasma optical emissions spectrometer (ICP-OES) measures metals and several non-metals in solution from trace to major levels. Axial and radial viewing of the plasma increases the linear dynamic range and reduces sample matrix-related interference. Standard operating procedures for this instrument follow SW-846 Test Method 6010. This instrument is capable of analyzing water and liquid extracts from wastes, soils, sediments, fly ash, cements, and biological samples.

This instrument is currently configured to test for the following elements:

Aluminum (Al)
Antimony (Sb)
Arsenic (As)
Barium (Ba)
Beryllium (Be)
Boron (B)
Cadmium (Cd)
Calcium (Ca)
Chromium (Cr)
Cobalt (Co)
Copper (Cu)
Iron (Fe)
Lead (Pb)
Magnesium (Mg)
Manganese (Mn)
Molybdenum (Mo)
Nickel (Ni)
Potassium (K)
Phosphorus (P)
Selenium (Se)
Silicon (Si)
Silver (Ag)
Sodium (Na)
Strontium (Sr)
Sulfur (S)
Thallium (Tl)
Tin (Sn)
Titanium (Ti)
Vanadium (V)
Zinc (Zn)
Zirconium (Zr)

Elements not included in this list can be added to the instrument once the user has purchased the appropriate reference standards. The ICP-OES is a staff-run instrument with pricing based on a per-sample charge. All sample submissions are handled via MDERFH’s iLab Core.
