Cohesive integration of these components provides materials-specific &#8220;source term&#8221; release information for support of decisions involving materials management.<\/p>\n<h3>Collaboration<\/h3>\n<p>LEAF is a collaborative research effort between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Vanderbilt University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering\" href=\"http:\/\/engineering.vanderbilt.edu\/CivilAndEnvironmentalEngineering.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Vanderbilt University School of Engineering, Nashville, TN<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The <a title=\"Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecn.nl\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands, Petten<\/a>, the Netherlands<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"DHI Solutions and Software\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dhigroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">DHI, Horsholm, Denmark<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"United States Environmental Protection Agency\" href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> (Office of Research &amp; Development and Office of Solid Waste)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Leaching Tests<\/h3>\n<p>Leaching tests are used to characterize fundamental leaching behavior of a subject material through interpretation of test results.\u00a0 In addition,\u00a0testing under specific release\u00a0conditions\u00a0 provides a basis for comparison both\u00a0between materials\u00a0and\u00a0between\u00a0model predictions and testing data.\u00a0\u00a0Each of the four leaching tests recommended\u00a0udner LEAF\u00a0is designed to vary a critical release-controlling parameter (e.g., pH, liquid-to-solid ratio, leaching time) to provide leaching data over a broad range of test conditions.<\/p>\n<h3>Data Management<\/h3>\n<p>Integration of multi-point leaching tests and support of geochemical speciation modeling requires that\u00a0a large number of data be maintained, displayed and output for reporting support.\u00a0 The LeachXS Lite\u2122 program facilitates data management and test result visualization by providing tools for importing laboratory\u00a0data from a provided set of Microsoft Excel\u00ae-based spreadsheets, creating comparisons of leaching data for different tests or materials, and outputing data to for uniform reporting.<\/p>\n<h3>Assessment Approaches<\/h3>\n<p>Depending upon the level detail and precision required, LEAF provides for the use of a wide range of assessment approaches from simple empirical relationships to complex reactive transport models based on geochemical speciation of the solid material.
