The artistic and analytical extension activity provides an active-learning opportunity through which students not only acquire knowledge, but also create meaning. By applying their knowledge of Spanish history and the process of writing history to create their own historical narrative, students think critically about cultural objects, their purposes, and their construction.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QfTIpgjVg58?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project Overview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spanish<\/li>\n<li>Intermediate (High)\/Advanced<\/li>\n<li>Semester-long project<\/li>\n<li>Website<\/li>\n<li>No costs involved<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/timeline.knightlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">knightlab.com<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesson Plan and Materials:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/338\/2020\/10\/19225606\/Panda-Worksheet-Timeline-Mural.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timeline Mural Worksheet.docx<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/338\/2020\/10\/19225606\/Mural-Lesson-Plan.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mural Lesson Plan<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Project Description:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>These activities are designed to:<\/b><br \/>\n\u2022 reinforce knowledge of these events.<br \/>\n\u2022 provide a concrete example for considering how the portrayals of events and the inclusion and exclusion of events shape the story that is told.<br \/>\n\u2022 apply knowledge of the construction of history to identify gaps in the historical narrative.<br \/>\n\u2022 utilize Spanish language skills in a historical context.<\/p>\n<p><b>STEP ONE:<\/b><br \/>\nEach group of students is responsible for annotating one portion of Josep Renau\u2019s mural \u201cEspa\u00f1a hacia America\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022 Cave paintings of Altamira<br \/>\n\u2022 Augustus<br \/>\n\u2022 Reconquista<br \/>\n\u2022 Literary figures<br \/>\n\u2022 Explorers<br \/>\n\u2022 Conquest of the Americas<br \/>\n\u2022 The Americas<\/p>\n<p><b>For their assigned segment, students should:<\/b><br \/>\n\u2022 identify the year(s) represented in the scene<br \/>\n\u2022 identify the historical figures included<br \/>\n\u2022 explain the importance of this moment in Spanish history (what happened)<\/p>\n<p>Students\u2019 contributions to the timeline are informed by relevant course readings and may utilize additional reference materials as necessary.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the project, the class will have generated an annotated timeline of how Renau imagined the progression of foundational moments from Spanish history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP TWO:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Individually, students will identify an event that has been excluded from this telling of Spanish history.<\/p>\n<p><b>NARRATIVE: Write a 3-to-5-page analysis in Spanish in which you explain:<\/b><br \/>\n\u2022 What event did you choose?<br \/>\n\u2022 When did the event transpire?<br \/>\n\u2022 Who was involved?<br \/>\n\u2022 Does this event provide representation or context for a traditionally marginalized population?<br \/>\n\u2022 What happened at this event?<br \/>\n\u2022 How does the event contribute to the Spanish historical narrative: Would the inclusion of this event change the mural\u2019s message?
