After I introduce the clothing vocabulary in context and provide guided practice for the class, students complete an extension activity using the attached worksheet. This activity works like a scavenger hunt; guided by the questions on the attached worksheet, students search for specific items and describe the colors and fabrics of different pieces of clothing. To apply what they have learned, at the end of the worksheet, students then search the website to select an outfit for their professor. This allows students to practice new vocabulary words in context and write short, descriptive sentences. I also ask students to justify their selections by including adjectives and opinion phrases. My goal is to have students see clothing items in an authentic context, practice the vocabulary terms in a real-life setting, and learn more about the clothing styles of other countries.

Please keep in mind that the worksheet may need to be adjusted to the current items being offered on the site.

COPYRIGHT & CREDIT

Melanie Forehand

Vanderbilt University

This lesson uses the Zara website to practice clothing vocabulary in an authentic context.
