Director of campus recreation to retire after 50 years of service

Be careful when choosing your first job, advises Sam Hirt, director of campus recreation at Vanderbilt, because it might end up being your career.

On Sept. 2-€”also Labor Day-€”Hirt retired after 50 years of service to the university. When he started, campus recreation-€™s domain was little more than part-time use of Memorial Gym and a few athletic fields. Under his leadership, it has grown to include a 136,000-square-foot stand-alone  Recreation Center, opened in 1990, and will soon include the 170,000-square-foot addition that-€™s currently under construction.
