RA & HR of the Month

As a way of recognizing the outstanding contributions of our student staff, the Office of Housing and Residential Education will recognize a select RA each month. RAs are nominated by their fellow students, peer RAs, ResEd staff members, and Residential Faculty for their contributions to their respective residential community with regard to RA responsibilities (programming, leadership, mentoring, student care, etc.) as well as contributions to the Vanderbilt and/or Nashville Community.

This Month’s Featured RA:

Anjuli Young

Brascomb

What does being an RA mean to you?

“To me, being an RA means being present. I know that there are people on my hall who will never need me as a resource, but everyone is better off when they, at the very least, have a friendly face asking how their day went. My goal is for my residents to know that no matter how they’re doing, I’m here looking out for them and that I’m on their side. It’s so easy for sophomores coming from the Commons to Branscomb to feel like they’re loosing that level of security and community, and so I hope to help continue that here on main campus for them.”

Quotes from Anjuli’s nomination:

“Anjuli has been, month after month, one of the most hardworking and helpful RAs to work with on staff”

“She’s handled all of the complex issues in stride, providing caring support for residents that are all younger than her and serving as a positive role model for the girls who live on her hall”

This Month’s Featured HR:

Gabi Grys

Murray House

What does being an HR mean to you?

“Being a Head Resident has been the most rewarding part of my Vanderbilt experience. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity this year to collaborate with my Faculty Head of House to create new traditions for Murray House as we embarked on our first year on the job together; watching our ideas come to life through the fantastic residents and RA staff of Murray House has been such a joy. I always tell my tours that I have only ever lived in a freshmen dorm (and I’m returning as a Commons Lifer next year!) because I so deeply believe in the mission of the Commons and what we are able to accomplish as a community to set first-year students up for success. Having the chance to be a part of that mission as a Head Resident has been such a blessing and has fundamentally shaped my college career. “
