“Do you want to meet a ghost?”

Scenes of Terror in Japanese Film and Fiction

by Gerald Figal, Associate Professor of History and Asian Studies

Following a brief introductory account on ghosts in pre-modern Japanese  folklore, art, and literature, the talk will focus on how classic ghosts are reinvented and appear in modern film and fiction. We will watch scenes of ghostly encounters and ask how these scenes produce fear and terror and what they say about modern life in Japan and elsewhere.
