McTyeire Fireside Chat: “Approaching Don Quixote
Presented by:  Professor Edward Friedman, Department of Spanish and Portuguese

Miguel de Cervantes-€™s Don Quixote, published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, is the consensus choice as -€œthe best novel ever.-€ The talk will focus on how this Spanish masterpiece has maintained the interest of readers and scholars for four hundred years. In a type of literary paradox, Cervantes brings in the past as a means of pointing toward the future, and his narrative is not only the story of an anachronistic knight errant and his winsome squire, but also the story of its own composition. Cervantes-€™s comic vision is profound as well as profoundly entertaining.
