Arguably the most influential creator, writer and producer in the history of television, Norman Lear brought primetime into step with the times. Using comedy and indelible characters, his legendary 1970s shows-€”such as -€œAll In the Family,-€ -€œMaude,-€ -€œGood Times-€ and -€œThe Jeffersons-€-€”boldly cracked open dialogue and shifted the national consciousness, injecting enlightened humanism into sociopolitical debates on race, class, creed and feminism. At 93, Mr. Lear is as vital and engaged as he ever was. Top-notch documentarians Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp,  Detropia) seize the opportunity to fashion a dynamic portrait that matches the spirit of their subject. Breaking down the fourth wall to create an evocative collage where past and present intermingle, they reveal a psychologically rich man whose extraordinary contributions emerge from both his personal story and a dialogue with the world.

What Remains: An Interactive Seminar on Cameraperson

STUDENTS may complete the Anchor Link at https://anchorlink.vanderbilt.edu/form/start/112858 once it is active to apply for a seminar ticket purchased by the Dean of Students office. Successful applicants will be invited to the Anchor Link seminar event so that they may RSVP, and will be eligible for vouchers redeemable at the Belcourt for a ticket to a Cameraperson screening.

Because of the limited number of seminar tickets available, the Dean of Students is not able to accommodate guests for this event.

Cameraperson is made of footage shot by cinematographer Kirsten Johnson over her decades-long career of traveling to the most violent, traumatic, and unstable places in the world, from Darfur, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Yemen, to American courtrooms, boxing gyms, and abortion clinics. Most of what we see Johnson shot for other documentaries; but, for a variety of reasons, the footage didn’t make it into the final version of those films. Scenes that would’ve been left on the proverbial cutting room floor are edited together as episodes that have deeply affected the filmmaker. Left behind, these scenes are also what remain. Through them, we glimpse a violent world history and an intimate portrait of a cameraperson imprinted by what she records.

This interactive seminar focuses on Johnson’s provocative and deeply moving film to consider both the vicissitudes of cinematic witnessing and the aesthetics of documentary form.  The aim is to guide participants in a sustained conversation and analysis of a film that grows more complex with each viewing.
