Congratulations, future Vanderbilt graduate!

The Provost’s Office for Inclusive Excellence is hosting the Network First-Gen virtual Graduate Recognition Ceremony on May 13th @ 2 p.m.

FirstVU and Network First-Gen realize that holding the identity of a first-generation student is complex. First-generation students are academically skilled and contribute greatly to the campus community. Part of the struggle for first-generation scholars is the lack of taught and shared critical cultural capital that is necessary to navigate the “hidden curriculum” of universities and colleges successfully which can impact first-generation students adversely.  If you are a graduate or undergraduate student who identifies with one or more of the criteria listed below, then you classify as a First-Generation College Student and we cordially invite you to participate in the Inaugural Network First-Gen Graduates’ Recognition Ceremony.

First-Generation students are students whose in-home parent(s) or guardian(s) did not graduate from a 4-year U.S. university; this can manifest as:

  • An individual both of whose parents did not complete a baccalaureate degree; or
  • In the case of any individual who regularly resided with and received support from only one parent, an individual whose only such parent did not complete a baccalaureate degree.
  • Students whose in-home parent(s) or guardian(s) have a high school education or less.
  • Students whose in-home parent(s) or guardian(s) only attended a 2-year higher education institution whether in the US or abroad.

If you would like to be a part of this virtual celebration, you are required to RSVP. Please do so by end of day May 3rd, 2021. To RSVP, please register here.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Provost’s Office for Inclusive Excellence via email at Officeforinclusiveexcellence@vanderbilt.edu.

Again, congratulations, and we hope to see your RSVP soon.
