Chalene Helmuth, Ph.D.
Chalene Helmuth, Ph.D., is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and is Faculty Head of Sutherland House in the Martha Rivers Ingram Commons.
Professor Helmuth teaches Latin American literature and Spanish language courses and is the author of two books on contemporary Latin American literature and culture. Her research interests include narrative and identity; developing cultural competencies in study-abroad contexts; and sustainability in tourism. She has directed study abroad programs in several Latin American countries and teaches an iSeminar on designing your own, successful study abroad experience.
As Faculty Head of Sutherland House, Professor Helmuth works closely with student leaders to design events that nurture their intellectual, social, and global curiosity.
This semester she is teaching a first-year writing seminar entitled, “Ecocritical Perspectives in Latin American Fiction and Film,” and a new course, “Nashville en español.”
