Chalene Helmuth, Ph.D.

Chalene Helmuth, Ph.D., is Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Languages and Associate Professor of the Practice in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Professor Helmuth teaches Latin American literature and Spanish language courses and is the author of two books on contemporary Latin American literature and culture. Her research interests include narrative and identity; developing cultural competencies in study-abroad contexts; and sustainability in tourism. She has directed study abroad programs in several Latin American countries.  Prior to her appointment as Director of the VCL, Prof. Helmuth served as Faculty Head of Sutherland House for fifteen years.

Prof. Helmuth has been an Ingram Scholar Adviser since 2016.
