Tucker Scott is a senior at Vanderbilt University majoring in Public Policy Studies with a minor in Philosophy. He is originally from Knoxville and has lived in Tennessee his entire life. Throughout his childhood, Tucker volunteered on houses in impoverished, rural areas of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia through Appalachian Service Project. This program exposed a part of the world that was completely different than that of his childhood. In rural regions of Appalachia, dire poverty and radically inadequate access to healthcare in the active coal-mining industry are the norm. From this moment on, Tucker knew that he wanted to lead a life that would enable others to live without the pressure of pre-existing social structures weighing them down.

During his three years at Vanderbilt University, Tucker volunteered with the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee (ACLU-TN) and Vanderbilt Microfinance Club. At ACLU-TN, Tucker focused on criminal justice reform as a communications intern and by organizing Know Your Rights workshops across Nashville. As the President of Vanderbilt Microfinance Club, he expanded the mission of the organization to include educational seminars and consulting for social enterprises. This organization impact the lives of people in developing countries and enhance their quality of life through microloans. Tucker’s interest in international development was strengthened through spending a semester abroad in Nepal.

Tucker is interested in studying international development and the intersection of social change and sustainable development. He hopes to one day work to shape policy regarding environmental practices and international development. During his time at Vanderbilt, Tucker has become involved in community organizing and community building in the Nashville area. He plans to address issues like race, poverty, and the creation of upward mobility through education and community organizing. He is planning on going to law school.
