Hytham is a senior in the College of Arts and Science. He plans to utilize his majors in Medicine Health and Society as well as Psychology to help him pursue a career that combines medicine with public health.

Hytham’s passion for community engagement began to flourish during high school, when he founded his school’s Habitat for Humanity chapter and served as the Student Activist Coordinator for Amnesty International in the states of Arkansas and Mississippi. Throughout his time in college, Hytham has been involved in a variety of social justice issues revolving around the health and well-being of immigrants and refugees. He has taught health literacy classes to refugees with both the Nashville International Center for Empowerment (NICE) and Siloam Healthcare. Furthermore, he has tutored high school refugee students and served as an advocate supporting local immigrants against wage theft with an organization named Workers Dignity. Hytham’s passion supporting the health of refugees was strengthened during his Ingram summer project, when he interned under the health department of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

Beyond the scope of immigrant and refugee rights, Hytham has also developed a passion advocating for students with developmental disabilities. He has served as a peer mentor with Next Steps, an inclusive post-secondary education program at Vanderbilt University committed to supporting the social and career development of students with intellectual disabilities. He hopes to draw upon these experiences advocating for others to develop a career in medicine with a strong sense of cultural competency.
