London, England - Baron's Court Project and New Horizon Youth Centre

For two months, Mara Truslow and I immersed ourselves in the homeless community in West London by working with Baron’s Court Project and New Horizon Youth Centre. Baron’s Court Project (BCP) is a nonprofit that aims to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and mental health problems by increasing people’s self-efficacy through fostering a sense of community. BCP serves adults who suffer from mental health problems and homelessness in the Hammersmith & Fulham area of Zone 1, London. The center is open five days a week from 2-5 PM and offers a myriad of drop-in services each day. There are also planned activities which include a cafe, mental health support groups, computer skills classes, life skills groups and opportunities to use shower, laundry, mail, and telephone facilities. Mara and I developed relationships with the service users by co-facilitating these activities, which helped us to develop our creative writing program and to cater to the needs of the service users.
