2. GREAT LOOKING NEW BOOK ON MINING IN LATIN AMERICA EDITED BY GSN'ER MICHAEL DOUGHERTY (SEE FLYER ATTACHED)

Dear Colleagues,

Apologies for cross-postings. We would like to announce the publication of our book: Mining in Latin America: Critical Approaches to the New Extraction, edited by Kalowatie Deonandan and Michael L. Dougherty.

The four sections of the book explore 1) conceptual approaches to contemporary extraction, 2) the idiosyncratic role of Canadian capital in new mining, 3) new dynamics in firm/community relations, and 4) innovations in jurisprudence related to mining.

As editors, we identified a series of key issues around mining that we felt been under-explored in the scholarly literature—property rights, fair trade certification schemes, investor rights regimes, transnational legal jurisdiction, the theorization and historicization of new mining, along with many more. We then lined up an interdisciplinary roster of well-known scholars to contribute original chapters on these specific issues. The end product is a comprehensive volume that tells the story of the causes, consequences and novelties of the twenty-first century mining boom in Latin America.

The book is regional in scope but edited by Guatemalanists with a chapter on Guatemala and one on El Salvador.

You can buy the book or ask your library to order it from the Routledge website

3. LAWYER IN NYC SEEKS EXPERT WITNESS ON GANG VIOLENCE IN RURAL GUATEMALA

From: Courtney Lee <courtneyl@bronxdefenders.org>

** Need for expert on rural Guatemalan town

I am seeking an expert who can explain the very high degree of gang-inflicted terror in the town of Estanzuela, Zacapa, Guatemala. Although many of our Central American clients have experienced violence and threats, the situation in Estanzuela seems to present uniquely in that the reigning gang (18th Street) does not seem to recruit, only extort and kill, and the death rate seems astronomical for a small rural town (e.g. these articles). I would like to understand if there are unique factors at play in Zacapa or in this town. Relatedly, our client's "social group" is simply being from Estanzuela — or perhaps being a US deportee from Estanzuela — so it would be helpful to understand the ways in which one's town of origin is evident to others in Guatemala.

Thanks for any/all help!

5. ACTIVIST GRANT WRITER LOOKING FOR INFO ON CAFTA-DR AND SMALL LAND HOLDERS IN GUATEMALA

FROM: Andrew Winters <Winters1@hotmail.com>

I am curious to know whether you are aware of any thorough analyses of the CAFTA – DR agreement and its effects on small land holders in Guatemala. I noted in a bulletin from the USDA that came out yesterday that Guatemala is not the recipient of a great deal of corn imports from the U.S. I wonder if anyone has taken a serious look at the effect on poor farmers in Guatemala. How does this affect the land of the "Hombre de Maiz?"

I am working as a proposal writer for Feed the Children, a medium to large size NGO, and we are going to submit a proposal to USAID which will seek solutions to regional problems in Central America. As a returned Peace Corps volunteer who lived for almost three years in San Juan Sacatepequez I am always looking for ways to help the people I lived and worked with for so long. Your thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated.
