3. MORE THREATS TOWARD COMMUNITY RADIO IN GUATEMALA
A few weeks ago, the representatives of the LIDER party introduced a bill in the Guatemalan congress that would criminalize community radio stations and impose jail sentences of 6-10 years for anyone who uses the airwaves without authorization. Community radio stations do not operate without licenses because they want to; they do so because the Guatemalan government has refused to create a legal framework that will include community radio. The Community Radio Movement of Guatemala and Cultural Survival are soliciting international solidarity, and are asking people to sign letters to members of Guatemala's Congress denouncing the proposed law. Jeffereson Street, Spring Green, WI 53588) has DVDs of the prize winning film "Granito: How to Nail a Dictator," directed by Pamela Yates, for sale at $23.95, including shipping.
