3.       CALL FOR SUPPORT FOR AMILCAR MENDEZ Amilcar Méndez Urízar has been diagnosed with a brain tumor.  This is a benign pituitary tumor, but it must be removed as soon as possible. As the tumor grows it causes damage and can cause blindness.  With the help of Kerry Kennedy and friends in the United States, Amilcar was very fortunate to obtain the offer of humanitarian (free) medical treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital, and he is currently scheduled for surgery on March 28, 2012. Although the treatment is free, Amilcar will have to pay for any medications, which may be quite expensive given his lack of U.S. medical insurance; travel; and living expenses while in the U.S., etc.  If you might be able to help, there are funds set up to which you can make a contribution. In the U.S., such donations are also tax-deductible. If donating by credit card: The Center for Gender & Refugee Studies at U.C. Hastings can accept funds to support the Mendez family.  You can make a contribution online using your credit card at: https://uchastings24024.thankyou4caring.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=384 In order for the money to be earmarked for the Mendez family, you MUST write “Amilcar Mendez” in the Comment box that appears under the Donation Information section of the page. Your acknowledgement of the donation for tax purposes will come from U.C. Hastings, and will thank you for your contribution to CGRS. Because the thank you is a form letter, it will not mention the Mendez family. If donating by check: “Amilcar Mendez” must be written in the Memo Line of the check, and the check should be mailed to: Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA , 3321 12th St., NE Washington, DC 20017 USA.  GHRC-USA will send you a receipt for the donation for tax purposes. (If you are donating from a country other than the U.S., we recommend donation via the online mechanism described above). ———————————————————————————————————————————
