Situated between two of the world's powerhouses, Mongolia is known for its traditional and cultural nomadic communities, livelihoods and customs but, the country is undergoing rapid socio-economic and cultural changes due to extractive mining impacting the country’s social, economic and environmental future. Students will see up close the international roots of Mongolian culture and examine similarities and differences between contemporary Russia, Chinese, and Central Asian cultures. See the East Gobi Desert, vast mountain ranges, and forest steppes. Also, experience two different types of homestays; an urban homestay in Ulaanbaatar, then for a few weeks students will live in a ger with a nomadic herding family on the steppes of Mongolia, learning and riding horses as your form of transportation. Students will go on a comparative learning excursion to East Siberia (Lake Baikai), and once coursework is finished, students will have the option to choose to do an internship or an independent study project on a topic of their choice.
