We are now taking orders
for the 2013–14 Commodore Yearbook and Parent Congratulatory Ads to appear in
the yearbook.
Simply visit thecommodoreyearbook.com to
place your order and also order your Parent Congratulatory Ad. We only print
enough copies to fill the orders we receive. The yearbook is mailed to your
or your student's permanent home address in August 2014 (so that we may cover
Commencement and the end of the academic year before printing). Parent ads
are available for parents of first-year students, sophomores, juniors and
seniors.
FREE YEARBOOK
PORTRAITS! Sessions begin on October 14 for both underclass students
and graduating seniors. Seniors are encouraged to make a reservation for
their portrait sittings. Underclass students do not need an appointment. For
additional info about portraits, please visit thecommodoreyearbook.com/portraits.html.
SCRAPBOOK SECTION!
We are once again inviting parents, families, students, faculty and staff,
and Vanderbilt community members to submit photos of Vandy events that they
attend for our very popular Scrapbook Section of the
yearbook. If you are attending events on campus such as Family Weekend or
Commencement or are just making a family visit on a quiet weekend, we hope to
include your photos in the yearbook.
For more information, email thecommodoreyearbook@gmail.com
or call (615) 343-3064.

Why give up the keys to the car, when Zipcar
can!
Zipcar is a member-based car-sharing
service on campus that gives students who are 18 or older access to cars by
the hour or day. Gas and insurance is always included, and rates start at
just $7.50/hour. To learn more about the service or to sign your student up,
visit zipcar.com/student.
To celebrate the new school year, Zipcar is giving the first $45 in driving
credit for free. Make sure your student enters promo code B2S2013 when they
sign up!*
Feeling extra generous? Give the gift of Zipcar so
your student can save some extra money for "books."
*Offer is good for
Vanderbilt students and expires 6/30/2014.

Career Corner:
Become 18 Again! during Fall
for the Arts
The Center for Student Professional
Development invites parents to visit 18
Again! with their students during Family Weekend's Fall for the
Arts event. Connect with your student through your personal stories of
humility, change and self-discovery during this exciting and engaging
retrospective event.
Step back in time and rediscover with your student who you were at 18. What
were your goals? What has changed? This event includes an interactive game
and a Vanderbilt parent art project, "Then & Now." Join us for an evening of
conversation, fun and discovery!
The 18 Again!
event will be a featured tent at Fall for the Arts during Family Weekend, on
Friday, September 27, 4:30–6:30 p.m. on The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons.

Parent conversations
What
to expect at Family Weekend, September 27–29
With Move-In Day well behind us and the semester under way, next up on
parents' calendars is Family Weekend. Follow these tips to be prepared and
enjoy the weekend:
Pack appropriately:
Check the weather and pack accordingly. Be prepared to walk a lot, dress for
hot or cold weather and bring your student anything left at home.
Catch a glimpse:
Be enthusiastic to see a slice of your student's life at college. Participate
in open houses, faculty lectures and special campus tours. Eat campus food,
meet your student's friends and get to know other parents as well.
Delve into university resources:
Now that your student has the basics of college figured out—dorm life,
roommates, registering for classes, etc.—check out what resources the college
has to offer. Study abroad programs, career preparation, and sororities or
fraternities may be options to discuss with your student during Family
Weekend.
Go shopping:
Especially if this is your first time seeing your student since he/she moved
to school, expect a few trips to stock up on food, dorm necessities or even
clothes for the coming season.
Meet with
administration: If you have specific questions about
finances, scholarships or academic advising, make an appointment before
Family Weekend. While there will likely be faculty and administrators present
throughout the weekend, they won't be available to sit down and talk with all
parents who have questions.
Get out in the
community: One of the perks for college students whose
parents visit is a break from campus food. Take your student out to dinner
and explore the restaurants in the area. If your student is considering
living off-campus next year, take time to check out nearby apartments and
rental costs.
Plan for maintenance:
Students who are a few months into living independently still need a little
help from mom and dad. Allow for time to take care of things that might not
be on your student's radar, like getting an oil change or haircut—unless your
son is purposefully going for the unkempt look, of course—or even washing
towels and sheets.
