Academic resources for
students
Study skills
consultation at the Psychological and Counseling Center
This program is designed to assist students in improving their reading and
study techniques on a developmental, rather than a remedial, basis. While
it is very helpful to students who are experiencing academic difficulties,
it is also beneficial to anyone who wishes to become a more efficient
learner.

The Writing Studio
The Writing Studio is a free and confidential writing resource for
Vanderbilt students. Writing consultants work with students on any piece of
writing, from course assignments to extracurricular projects. The focus of
a consultation session varies according to the individual writer and
project; for example, consultant and writer may discuss strategies for
clarifying and developing a thesis, or they might talk about issues
regarding organization and word choice.
Because we encourage students to understand writing as a process, we work
with writers at any stage, from brainstorming to revision. A writing
consultation provides students with opportunities for thinking critically
and responsibly about the choices they make as writers. Students may make
their own appointments through our online scheduling system at vanderbilt.edu/writing.
The studio also sponsors extracurricular events, including Dinner and a
Draft, On Writing, and the Undergraduate Writing Symposium.

Arts and Science Tutoring
Arts and Science Tutoring offers free, individual, appointment-based
tutoring to all Vanderbilt undergraduates for introductory classes in the
following departments: biological sciences, chemistry, economics,
mathematics, neuroscience, physics, and most of the foreign languages.
While students should always consult their instructors as academic
resources first, they can find additional assistance at the Help Desks
offered by various departments; their schedules are posted on the A&S Tutoring website.
Note: The School of Engineering offers Help Desks for all students, not
just engineering students, in many science and math classes.

Zerfoss Student Health
Center's information about meningitis
Given the recent outbreak
of meningococcal meningitis at Princeton University, Vanderbilt is
reminding all students and members of the Vanderbilt community to be
aware of the symptoms of meningitis and of how to decrease the risk of
contracting meningitis.
Though the rare meningitis strain at Princeton is not covered by the
standard meningitis vaccination, most strains that infect college
students are included in the standard pre-college meningitis vaccine. If
you and your student are unsure about their meningitis vaccination date,
please encourage your student to access personalized vaccination
information via myhealthatvanderbilt.com
or to contact the Zerfoss Student Health Center at (615) 322-2427.
To learn more about the symptoms of meningitis and about Vanderbilt's
plans if an incident(s) of meningitis were to occur on campus, please click here for a fact
sheet or visit the Student Health website.
You may also read an email message sent to
all students from Student Health earlier this week for more information.
As always, the Student Health Center is here to answer any questions or
concerns students or parents may have.

Zipcar: Why give up the
keys to the car next semester, when Zipcar can!
Instead of sending your
undergrad back to school with a car (and having to deal with the costs),
check out Zipcar, a member-based car-sharing service on campus that gives
students who are 18 or older access to cars by the hour or day. Gas and
insurance are always included, and rates start at just $7.50/hour. To
learn more about the service or to sign your student up, visit zipcar.com/campus.
To celebrate the holidays, Zipcar is giving the first $45 in driving
credit for free. Make sure your student enters promo code B2S2013 when
they sign up! Offer is good for VU students and expires 6/30/2014.

Career Corner:
Brought to you by the
Center for Student Professional Development
First-year
students can benefit from Center services
The Center for Student Professional Development offers a variety of
professional development programs and resources for all Vanderbilt
students regardless of academic year or major.
First-year students in The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons at Vanderbilt
have access to a number of programs and activities led by our student
Peer Coaches and Anne Reed, who supports the Center's outreach with The
Ingram Commons and in the houses.
Watch now as Anne talks about her work with
first-year students.
We encourage first-year students to connect with the Center early in
their academic career through our walk-in hours, workshops, and
peer-to-peer conversations. Students can participate in Center
professional development programming for campus organizations and
departments including VUcept, Residential Education, and Admissions.
Students do not need a plan to visit with the Center. We can help
students explore their options, make connections, and discover their
unique identity while supporting their transition from high school to
college.
To learn more about Center services, visit us online at vanderbilt.edu/career.
