5 practical benefits of internships
Internships can give undergraduates a competitive edge by helping to clarify their interests, build professional skills and establish relationships with industry professionals. An increasing number of companies have established dedicated undergraduate internship programs to serve as pipelines to full-time employment following graduation.

Internships allow students to:

1.    Discover and pursue opportunities by simply going through the process of writing résumés, submitting applications and interviewing for internships.

2.    Identify strengths and interests by exploring a particular field/industry and gaining insight into the type of work and/or work environment they prefer.

3.    Understand and manage transitions by engaging in the "world of work" and its established protocol, which can benefit students as they make the transition from student life to professional life.

4.    Develop professional skills including appropriate business etiquette and how to respond to different organizational settings.

5.    Leverage personal connections by building relationships and developing professional networks, which is critical for when they begin seeking full-time positions.

To begin their internship search, students can visit the Center for Student Professional Development during walk-in hours, offered daily, and meet with one of our professional coaches. Locations and times are available on the Center's website.

Have you heard about Zipcar?

With Zipcar, your student will have the freedom to make the most of their experience, without bringing their car (or yours!) back to campus. Zipcar is a car-sharing service that lets students reserve cars by the hour or the day.

As a member, they will receive:

·         Access to Zipcars 24/7

·         Discounted hourly rates for students age 18 and older: rates start at just $7.50/hour or $69/day

·         Gas, insurance and maintenance are included for free!

·         They can join for only $25 a year, and receive $35 in driving credit for the first month

Learn more and get started at zipcar.com/vanderbilt. Don't let them forget to enter promo code WINTERWELCOME2014 on their application to get $10 in additional driving credit!

February's most frequently asked question: What are my student's storage options for the summer?

Campus storage—limited storage space is available on campus in university storage rooms on a first-come, first-served basis. No more than two personal items may be stored. Only luggage, footlockers, metal garbage cans and refrigerators that have been properly defrosted may be stored. For more information, please call the Office of Housing and Residential Education at (615) 322-2591.

UPS Store storage services—while there are many local storage facilities around campus, the UPS Store is Vanderbilt's preferred vendor for shipping and storage. For your student's safety, only UPS has the privilege to enter the residence halls for pickup or delivery to students. Other moving vendors may not enter the building to collect items. Students will have to bring their items outside and meet vendors other than UPS. From April 21–May 3, UPS will offer free in-room pickups. Stay tuned for more information.

A College Parent's Translation Guide

LOL image

Sometimes parents need a translator to converse with their college students. New lingo, interests and courses influence their communication, and it can be like they're speaking a new language—or typing in shorthand when they text on their phones.
