Career advice abounds at Soiree at Sarratt

If your child had an opportunity to achieve better insight into the career path they've chosen, would you help? If your child had an opportunity to discuss their ambitions with experienced and knowledgeable professionals who were actively engaged in the field they have studied so hard to pursue, would you help? If maybe by your words of wisdom and counsel your child could find the exact position and information they needed to achieve and succeed in their first job, would you help?

Of course, your answer to all of these questions is: YES!

Vanderbilt offers an incomparable program for students to learn about career fields. The Soiree at Sarratt is a very special event held each year during Family Weekend where parents volunteer a couple of hours to be a part of informal panel discussions, talking about their vocation, answering questions and offering suggestions.

August's most frequently asked question:
How do I register for Family Weekend?

Registration for Family Weekend is now open online. The registration fee is $35* per person, which includes three meals during the weekend. The fee is waived for Vanderbilt students and children 12 and under.
*Additional charges will apply for the football game against UAB and the Athenian Sing talent show.

Football tickets for the UAB game will be available as part of the Family Weekend online registration process. The cost will be $40 per ticket. Vanderbilt students may get in free with their Vanderbilt ID, but they must sit in a student-only section. If you do not wish to register for Family Weekend, single-game football tickets will be available beginning August 1 for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis through the athletics ticket office.

Homesickness: What it is and how to deal with it

Students across the nation are preparing to start the fall semester at more than 200 colleges and universities that partner with University Parent Media. Move-in day and first-week activities are abuzz with excitement, but as students move in and parents head out, homesickness can take root.

According to an article on CNN.com, homesickness isn't about missing home. "Instead, it stems from our instinctive need for love, protection and security–feelings and qualities usually associated with home," according to a clinical psychologist quoted in the article. "When these qualities aren't present in a new environment, we begin to long for them-and hence home." Read More.

Waiving student health insurance

If your student missed the August 1 deadline to waive the Gallagher Koster student health insurance, it's not too late. Vanderbilt requires that all students be covered by a health insurance plan that is comparable to or exceeds the Gallagher Koster plan, and students with other health insurance must waive the Gallagher Koster plan each year. If your student has other insurance and does not wish to participate in the Gallagher Koster plan, he or she must complete an online form confirming other insurance. If the annual waiver is not completed, then your student will remain enrolled in the plan offered by the university and will be responsible for paying the insurance premium.

New name and location for the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity

As of July 1, 2013, the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity has changed its name to the Office of Student Accountability, Community Standards, & Academic Integrity. This change is intended to more accurately reflect the mission of the office, which is to promote good citizenship, respect, and responsibility through education, and to more clearly delineate and reinforce the importance of individual accountability and the upholding of community expectations.

The office will be moving in August to Suite 301 in Rand Hall to facilitate enhanced accessibility for students as well as more meaningful integration and communication with other departments within the Office of the Dean of Students.

These changes will greatly improve the experience of our students as well as the efficiency and substantive content of the office's operations. To learn more, click here.
