Tips for move-out in May

The semester is coming to a close, and the Office of Housing and Residential Education has helpful move-out tips to ensure the process runs smoothly for your student next month.

  1. Students must check out before departing campus. They need to meet with their resident adviser to review and sign their room condition report (RCR) and report any damages.
  2. Return all keys to the resident adviser staff to avoid the $50 replacement cost.
  3. All residents are responsible for cleaning their rooms prior to departure to avoid associated cleaning fees.
  4. All personal belongings must be removed, including purchased carpets and refrigerators.
  5. Recycle or donate unwanted items in good condition at designated drop-off locations.
  6. Make arrangements for summer storage.
  7. Students should submit a "change of address" form to the post office before they leave campus.

Your student will soon receive an official notice from the Office of Housing and Residential Education regarding the closing of the residential halls.

Career Corner:
"Industry Champions" LinkedIn groups connect students to alumni in finance and consulting

Last fall the Center for Student Professional Development launched two LinkedIn subgroups for students interested in two targeted industry areas: Vanderbilt Industry Champions – Finance and Vanderbilt Industry Champions – Consulting.

These private LinkedIn groups aim to help students connect and interact with industry professionals in a forum that allows the sharing of industry-specific career, internship, and job-related advice and referrals.

"True to Vanderbilt's entrepreneurial spirit, we have developed an innovative approach, which is the first of its kind for Vanderbilt students," said Center director Cindy Funk. "The Industry Champions LinkedIn groups provide insider information to VU students, making it easier for them to connect to opportunities."

Through group discussions, Champions share information about a specific position or provide advice on what students should know when pursuing an internship within the industry. Anecdotal evidence indicates that students are making important connections and getting information not available in other ways.

Currently there are 284 group members (including students and alumni) and 25 alumni Industry Champions. The Alumni Champions are recruited by team leaders Leslie Labruto (BE'11), Jason Levine (BA'10), Zach Barrett (BA'10) and Sam Walter (BS'10). Industry Champion participants are employed by top companies in their field, including Accretive Health, Capgemini, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan and McKinsey & Company.

Students interested in joining these LinkedIn groups must first request to join the main Center LinkedIn group before sending a request to join the Finance or Consulting subgroups. Students new to LinkedIn should visit the Center for Student Professional Development office during walk-in hours for assistance with getting started. April's most frequently asked question: What options does my student have for summer storage?

Limited storage space is available on campus in university storage rooms on a first-come, first-served basis. No more than two personal items may be stored. Only luggage, footlockers, metal garbage cans and refrigerators that have been properly defrosted may be stored.

All items should be labeled with:

  1. Student name
  2. Date stored
  3. Fall 2014 residence hall and room
  4. Permanent address and phone number

Storage space is not guaranteed. For more information, please call the Office of Housing and Residential Education at (615) 322-2591.

UPS Store storage services

While there are many local storage facilities near campus, the UPS Store is Vanderbilt's preferred vendor for shipping and storage. For your student's safety, only UPS has the privilege to enter the residence halls for pickup or delivery to students. Other moving vendors may enter the building to collect items but must be escorted by the student. From April 21–May 3, UPS will offer free in-room pickups by appointment.

Make packing up for the summer easy with the UPS Store—the university-approved packing/storage/shipping company. The UPS Store will come to campus, sells boxes and packing supplies, and either ships boxes home or holds them in storage. It is the responsibility of students to bring their packed boxes to specified areas for pickup, shipping or summer storage. Items stored through this service are delivered to residence halls or apartments on specified dates in the fall. For more information, including pricing and scheduling, call (615) 327-0407 or check out the UPS Store's Vanderbilt website .
