AlertVU expanded emergency notification system launched—updated student contact information needed

AlertVUAlertVU, Vanderbilt's emergency notification system, was expanded Jan. 1 to include all members of the Vanderbilt community and has been strengthened by a new, more robust operating system.

The new system has been tested twice and all students have been notified of the upgrade. Encourage your student to log in to the online enrollment system, YES, and update their information in the "phone numbers" section. Once that's done, students will receive emergency alerts in as many ways as possible if the system is used. Students may also enter a parent's mobile number.

AlertVU is only one of Vanderbilt's communication avenues. The university homepage, vanderbilt.edu, will continue to be the primary location for all information and ongoing updates. Other existing systems, such as the pager system used by the Medical Center, campus security notices, electronic message boards, sirens and social media will continue to be used as part of the university and medical center's overall emergency communications strategy.

Contact alertvu@vanderbilt.edu with any questions.

Career Corner: Tips for discovering and pursuing internships

It's never too early for students to begin exploring industries or employers that interest them—and internships are a great place to start.

Act now!The majority of summer internship postings and application deadlines occur in January and February for companies recruiting on campus. However, most students find internships through personal connections including family, friends, classmates and the Vanderbilt community.

The Center for Student Professional Development offers a number of resources that help students find internship opportunities.

Online resources—connect to these opportunities through the center's website:

  • DoreWays—online resource for jobs and internships from top employers
  • University Career Action Network (UCAN)—a comprehensive online internship database available only to the best colleges and universities, including Vanderbilt
  • The Internship Database—this searchable collection of employers allows students to learn about internships previously held by Vanderbilt students

Networking resources—networking is a great way for students to discover internships that may not be widely advertised, and to learn more about a particular employer or industry. Resources include:

  • VUconnect—a global online community of Vanderbilt alumni where students can build networking relationships and seek out career advice from fellow Commodores
  • Alumni chapters—Local Alumni Association chapters are great for networking, and students are welcome at any chapter event.

Students may also attend one of our daily walk-in sessions where career coaches are available to help with searches, resume writing and interview preparation. Connect with the center online or in person by calling (615) 322-2750.

January's most frequently asked question:
Would you like to be a parent volunteer?

The Parents and Family Programs Office has many ways parents can volunteer throughout the year, on and off campus. Learn more about how you can help.
