They were ecosystem engineers whose disappearance reshaped the landscapes they once roamed. A new study from Vanderbilt University\u2019s DREAM Lab reveals just how diverse these megaherbivores\u2019 diets were, highlighting the <strong>ecological roles that vanished when they went extinct<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Aditya Kurre (&#8217;25) and <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/biological-sciences\/bio\/larisa-desantis\/\">Associate Professor of Biological Sciences<\/a> and current Guggenheim Fellow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desantislab.com\/\">Larisa DeSantis<\/a>, the study shows that giant sloths were not simply oversized versions of today\u2019s tree-dwelling sloths. Instead, they filled complementary ecological niches, helping to disperse plants and fungi, dig for roots and tubers, and keep woody vegetation in check. And while it is hard to imagine that their ancestors were some of the most gigantic and diverse mammals to inhabit the Western Hemisphere, layers of evidence show us that their diets and behaviors reflected these characteristics,\u201d Kurre said.<\/p>\n<p>The paper, published in <em>Biology Letters<\/em> and titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rsbl.2025.0158\">Lost giants, lost functions: paleodietary insights into the ecological niches of Pleistocene ground sloths<\/a>,\u201d used dental microwear analysis to reconstruct these ancient diets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSloth teeth do not have enamel like ours do, which makes them tricky to study,\u201d DeSantis explained. \u201cBut by focusing on the dentin layer, we can still see microwear textures and compare them to living sloths that primarily eat leaves and closely related armadillos that are primarily insectivorous.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3749\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3749\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/295\/2025\/10\/22181052\/DeSantisLabSlothPressRelease25_10_4-1_Page_2_Image_0002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3749\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/295\/2025\/10\/22181052\/DeSantisLabSlothPressRelease25_10_4-1_Page_2_Image_0002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/295\/2025\/10\/22181052\/DeSantisLabSlothPressRelease25_10_4-1_Page_2_Image_0002.jpg 530w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/295\/2025\/10\/22181052\/DeSantisLabSlothPressRelease25_10_4-1_Page_2_Image_0002-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DeSantis taking a \u201csloth selfie\u201d at the Nashville Zoo during a scientific meeting (DeSantis)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The team made molds of fossil teeth, created clear casts, and scanned them under a 3D microscope. Computer software measured tiny scratches and pits that act as dietary fingerprints and reveal what these animals were really eating thousands of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Although once thought to be grass-eating grazers, evidence shows <em>Paramylodon harlani<\/em> specialized in hard foods such as roots, tubers, or fungi. Its powerful forelimbs and claws would have aided this behavior, making it a crucial forager of underground resources\u2015bioturbating the soil and dispersing fungi, fruit seeds, and other living organisms longer distances than otherwise possible. <em>Nothrotheriops shastensis<\/em>, on the other hand, was a selective browser, feeding on desert plants like yucca, agave, pine, and saltbush and shaping shrubland habitats in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModern sloths are exclusively arboreal leaf-eaters that reside in the tree canopies of Central and South America,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cBut giant ground sloths were neither analogous to living sloths nor ecological replicates of other herbivores at the La Brea Tar Pits. They played unique and complementary roles, and when they disappeared, entire ecological functions were lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their extinction reminds us that when we lose species, we also lose the ecological services that keep ecosystems functioning. As we celebrate International Sloth Day on October 20th, this research underscores the deep evolutionary legacy of sloths, past and present.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citation<\/strong>: Kurre, A. &amp; DeSantis, L.G.
