Rokas Named Mycological Society of America Fellow

A man stands in a bright, multi-story academic building, smiling at the camera while holding a small award plaque in both hands. He wears a dark short-sleeved polo shirt, dark pants, glasses, and sneakers. Behind him, an open atrium features red brick walls, large windows, metal railings, and staircases connecting the surrounding walkways.

Antonis Rokas, Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair in Biological Sciences and Director of Evolutionary Studies, was named a Mycological Society of America fellow in summer 2026. In his acceptance speech (video below), he outlines how he was not trained as a mycologist but has certainly found a home in the community as his career has matured.

According to the Mycological Society of America website, “The MSA Fellow Award is offered annually to an outstanding member of the Society for extended service and contributions to mycology in teaching and research.”

Rokas emphasized that science is not a solo act, and he would not be where he is today without the support of the mycological community, Vanderbilt, his collaborators, and especially the trainees he has had the privilege of working with over the years.
