image of Jane LandersJane Landers is Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of History at Vanderbilt University and the director of the Slave Societies Digital Archive. She has led digital preservation projects in Benin, Brazil, Cape Verde, Cuba, Colombia, and Florida. Her scholarship focuses on the African Diaspora in the Atlantic world. She has also consulted on a variety of archaeological projects, documentary films, web sites, and museum exhibits related to the African Diaspora. Much of her work centers on Spanish St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest European settlement in what is today the United States, and Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mosé, the nation's first free black town. Many of the Spanish Florida documents she worked with can be found in the Digital Archive.



image of Daniel GenkinsDaniel Genkins is a National Endowment for the Humanities Doctoral Fellow for the Slave Societies Digital Archive and a Ph.D. Candidate in Latin American and Atlantic history at Vanderbilt University. He is the Archive's data curation specialist and Library Technology and Digital Services liaison. His research examines Anglo-Spanish competition on Providence Island, Jamaica, and elsewhere in the southern Caribbean during the seventeenth century.



image of Kara SchultzKara Schultz is an  ACLS Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Humanities and Lecturer in the Department of History at Vanderbilt University. She is Metadata Specialist for the Digital Archive and trains graduate research assistants in metadata creation, Spanish and Portuguese paleography, and transcription. She has participated in digitization projects in Angola and Cape Verde and will direct a project in Niterói, Brazil. Her research examines slavery and the slave trade in the sixteenth and seventeenth-century South Atlantic (between Angola, Brazil, and the Río de la Plata).



image of Angela SuttonAngela Sutton  is a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Humanities and Lecturer in the College of Arts and Sciences at Vanderbilt University. She manages a diverse array of projects for the Digital Archive, including encoding, fundraising/grant writing, GIS, and web presence. She also provides training and supervises research assistants in these areas. Her primary research fields are Atlantic West Africa and the Caribbean, and she is currently working with Dutch, German, and Swedish language sources to investigate the relationships between Europeans and Africans in the Atlantic Gold Coast slave trade.


Contributors and Consultants


Clifford Anderson is Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning at Vanderbilt University, and an expert in scholarly communications. He consults for the SSDA on the topics of data curation, GIS, education technologies, and other digital humanities and library-related matters. 

Dale Poulter is the Director of Library Technology and Digital Services at Vanderbilt University. He is the SSDA Digital Archive Coordinator and Technical Advisor, helping the archive with storage solutions, data curation, and long-term preservation and access strategies.

Madeline Casad is a senior lecturer in Cinema and Media Arts and the associate director of the Digital Humanities Center at Vanderbilt University. SSDA makes use of her extensive experience with digital media practices and preservation.

Paula Covington is Latin American and Iberian Bibliographer for the Vanderbilt University Libraries and a Senior Lecturer in Latin American Studies. She has worked with the SSDA in various ways from its inception, and serves as advisor and facilitator to many of the archive's projects.
