REAL ID required to fly as of October 1, 2020

Beginning October 1, 2020, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require passengers 18 years or older to present a REAL ID-compliant U.S. driver’s license, state-issued ID, or other acceptable form of ID (such as a passport) to fly within the U.S.

Requirements to get a REAL ID vary by state. Visit dhs.gov/real-id for complete information.

The State of Tennessee list of of REAL ID required documents are attached.

Wait times can be lengthy at some state offices, so we encourage travelers who plan to use a U.S. driver’s license or state-issued ID to get a REAL ID soon.

After review and verification of documents have been conducted, your new permanent REAL ID driver’s license will be mailed to you within 4-6 weeks. Travelers will receive a temporary, secure paper driver’s license at the facility. Please note that TSA may not accept a paper document, so please plan ahead.

REAL ID-compliant licenses are marked by a star on the top right corner. Travelers who are not sure if their ID is compliant should check with their state driver’s license agency.
