VU General E-Newsletter [Vanderbilt University]

May 2017

Dear Colleagues,

Yesterday the Regional Director (RD) of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) directed four (4) separate elections for non-tenure-track faculty in A&S, Blair, Divinity, and Peabody.  The elections will be conducted through the U.S mail, with ballots sent directly to voters on May 15.  Returned ballots must be received by the NLRB no later than June 6 at 2 pm. At that time, the NLRB will count the votes.

As you are a non-tenured track faculty member with the title of associate, assistant or full professor, I am writing to clarify what this latest development means to you personally.

The RD’s recent decision directs that you will be able to vote in the election.

The RD found that the SEIU’s action to remove faculty with the title of assistant, associate and full professor from the bargaining unit was arbitrary. As a result, the RD has ruled that you are eligible to vote.  This is an important change.  The process has been and will continue to be complicated.  So other changes could be forthcoming.  But for the time being, the key is participation.  We want everyone to vote.  I, therefore, urge you participate in the election and return a ballot to the NLRB before the June 6 deadline.

For more detail about the RD’s decision, please see Provost Wente’s May 3, 2017 update, as well as the NLRB Election Notices that will be emailed to you and posted on campus.  There will also be upcoming communications about the election as we seek to ensure everyone participates.

Thank you for your time in this matter, especially as the semester comes to a close.

Sincerely,

John Geer

Vice Provost of Academic and Strategic Affairs
