ITA Support

The Vanderbilt University English Language Center (ELC) offers support for International Teaching Assistants (ITA). Specialized English for Academics and Professionals (EAP) courses including Academic Speaking, and Pronunciation are available to ITAs as is the English for Specific Purposes course ITA Communication. The ELC conducts English-language proficiency assessments for ITAs in August and January.

ITA Assessment

ITAs at Vanderbilt University (VU) may be evaluated for English-language proficiency at the request of their departments or by self-selection. ITAs may be assessed throughout their time at VU depending on how their role as ITAs and department needs may change. The evaluation process is designed to determine whether an ITA has the high level of communication skills needed to carry out TA responsibilities.

The assessment for Fall 2024 was in August. Returning ITAs for Spring 2025 need not be re-assessed; just sign up for your next ELC-recommended course in Step 3 below.)

Step 1: Complete ITA assessment sign-up form

Step 2: Attend ITA assessment at the ELC (if required)

  • The ELC will contact you soon after you complete the form to schedule an assessment

Step 3: Based on assessment results (or last semester’s grade and recommendation), the ELC may recommend one of the following courses:

  • ITA Communication
  • Academic Speaking
  • Pronunciation
