Position Summary:

The Graduate Assistant role is part of the Office of LGBTQI Life in the Inclusive Excellence division at Vanderbilt University.  The Graduate Assistant role will support the department’s educational and social programs and gain practical experience working with LGBTQI+ and allied students, staff, and faculty. This position works directly with the professional and student staff of LGBTQI Life to increase campus community involvement and to enhance students’ collegiate experience. LGBTQI life staff utilizes a social justice framework and values a collaborative approach to our work to create more inclusive campus environment for all.

Time Commitment:

The position will begin in August 2019 and last for 9 months.  Continuation of the assistantship will depend upon the satisfactory performance of your assigned duties and progress toward your degree. You will be expected to work 20 hours per week excluding university breaks. This may include some evening and weekend hours.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Life at Vanderbilt University is a cultural center and a place of affirmation for individuals of all identities, and a resource for information and support about gender and sexuality. Housed in the K.C. Potter Center, LGBTQI Life serves all members of the Vanderbilt community —students, faculty, staff, and alums —by creating educational, cultural, and social opportunities. The office also supports and advises LGBTQI-related campus groups and activities. The LGBTQI life staff is deeply engaged in the life of the University and is highly collaborative. The team aspires to center intersectional justice in its initiatives, programming, and structure

About Inclusive Excellence

The Office of Inclusive Excellence (IE) has as its mission to work in partnership with members of the Provost Office and Vanderbilt’s colleges/schools to ensure we advance the success and affirmation of all students and faculty.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Assist with the development of creative and collaborative programming and educational opportunities for the Vanderbilt community that are educationally sound, intersectional in nature, and speaks to the lived experiences of LGBTQI+ community members. Past graduate assistant-lead programs have included queer and trans people of color (QTPOC) socials, graduate student programming, LGBTQI history month events, social opportunities, and academic department collaborations.
  • Assist with the P.R.I.D.E. training program, Speak Out panels, and customized presentations for campus partners to ensure a more affirming University environment for LGBTQI+ individuals.
  • Utilize office listserves, social media accounts, and marketing materials to tell a compelling and accurate story of the work of LGBTQI Life at Vanderbilt to drive community engagement.
  • Provide information about campus and community resources, support, and referrals to Vanderbilt affiliates to facilitate a successful and affirming experience at the University.
  • Participate in events with Inclusive Excellence partner offices as needed (Diverse ‘Dores Day, MLK Day, cultural celebrations, etc.) to support colleagues and ensure these events run smoothly.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to support colleagues across the division to encourage the implementation or fulfillment of divisional goals and strategic priorities; other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position reports administratively to the Director of LGBTQI Life. Functionally, the position may partner closely with either the Program Coordinator or Assistant Director dependent on the nature of the agreed-upon project(s) within the Graduate Assistant’s portfolio.

Education and Certifications:

  • Full-time enrollment in a graduate degree program at Vanderbilt University is required.
  • Enrollment in the M.Ed. Higher Administration Education program in the Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations at Peabody College is strongly preferred.

Experience and Skills:

  • A firm understanding of the needs of the LGBTQI+ community is essential.
  • An understanding of how to center racial and social justice in student affairs practice is essential.
  • Ability to work collaboratively is necessary.
  • High level of attention to detail is necessary.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are strongly preferred.


The compensation for this assistantship includes an annual stipend of $11,300 paid over the 9-month period and a 66% tuition scholarship, (33% paid by the Office of the Dean of Students/Office of the Provost and 33% paid by Peabody College) paid directly to your student account. The tuition benefit is for the total minimum number of hours needed to complete your academic program.

NOTE: It is required that you apply for financial aid and request that any available work-study funding be used towards these positions.
