Next Steps at Vanderbilt Graduate Student Worker

Position Summary:

The graduate student worker is tasked with contributing to ongoing Next Steps projects and programming to assist with program development and student supports for the inclusive higher education program. The graduate student worker works in consultation with all members of the Next Steps at Vanderbilt program but directly reports to the Career Development Director. The graduate student worker has the opportunity to participate and have a voice in the 4-year expansion of one of America’s premier inclusive higher education programs for persons with intellectual disability. It is worth noting that Vanderbilt is the only top 20 university to afford these rich learning opportunities to their student body.   • Assist in the expansion and implementation of the Career Development initiatives
    • Assist in the development and facilitation of on or off-campus internships or paid employment for certificate students enrolled through Next Steps.
      • Teaching and reinforcing job skill development at job sites
      • Serving as a liaison between program and internship supervisors
      • Contributing knowledge and expertise in data collection measures
    • Research initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned

Time Commitment:

The position will begin in August 2020 and last for 9 months.  Continuation of the assistantship will depend upon satisfactory performance of your assigned duties and progress toward your degree. You will be expected to work 20 hours per week excluding university breaks and depending on your schedule. This may include some evening and weekend hours. We might have some 10-12 hr. per week positions as well.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position will report administratively and functionally to the Program Director and Career Development Director.

Education and Certifications:

  • Full-time enrollment in a graduate degree program at Vanderbilt University is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Full-time enrollment in a graduate degree program at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Personal and/or professional experience in the field of disability.
  • Ability to function well under pressure and in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Ability and maturity to handle confidential information.
  • Excellent decision-making and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


The graduate student worker will receive $14.00/hour for up to 20 hours per week.
