HEA Book Club Invitation

Posted by on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 in News Blurbs.

From Dr. Brenda McKenzie

DOS staff are invited to participate in a “book club” with the Higher Education Administration (HEA) professional students who are taking the Practice of Student Affairs class. There are currently a number of great books that address issues facing higher education and the broader community. Sometimes we read (or want to read) a book and wish we could discuss the content with others in relation to our work.  This is your opportunity to do so!

The students chose from the following books; more detailed information on each is attached:

  • Brown, B. (2018). Dare to lead: Brave work. Tough conversations. Whole hearts. New York, NY: Random House.
  • DiAngelo, R. (2018). White fragility: Why it’s so hard for white people to talk about race. Boston, MA: Beacon Press.
  • Tatum, B.D. (1997/2017). “Why are all the black kids sitting together in the cafeteria?” and other conversations about race. New York, NY: Basic Books.
  • Westover, T. (2018). Educated: A memoir. New York, NY: Random House.

You are invited  to select one of these books to read and join us on Monday, October 5, 2020 from 4:30-5:30 pm for a discussion facilitated by the students. You will be in breakout rooms in Zoom by each book. And understanding that the start of this year may require different things of you, you are welcome to join even if you do not finish a book (or even if you haven’t started one but want to learn more about one of the options listed). I would ask that you make note of your potential interest in the quick survey linked below:

Dr. McKenzie will reach out as October 5 gets closer to confirm who is planning to participate and to share the Zoom meeting link. If you have questions about this opportunity to engage with the Higher Education Administration students in a different way, please email, Brenda.l.mckenzie@vanderbilt.edu, or call 615-875-8820.  Please feel free to share with others you think might be interested.
