DOS STARS Spotlight: ReChard Peel

“ReChard has been an amazing supervisor and a truly awesome person to work with on IICC programs and initiatives. He recently was accepted to present a session at NCORE (National Conference on Race and Ethnicity) in Portland, Oregon this upcoming May. He also runs the iDialogues program in IICC and is able to constantly connect with our students and put forth his best effort always!”

What do you love most about working in Vanderbilt Dean of Students?
The people in the dean of students are AMAZING! Everyone is so smart and talented and willing to have a lot of fun inside and outside of work.

What led you to Vanderbilt?
I was drawn to the city of Nashville. I love that Vanderbilt is in an urban environment. There is so much to do in the city. It’s wonderful to be in a place that is so lively and energetic.

If you could give one piece of advice to a new staff member, what would it be?
My advice would be to find community early on. It’s important to find people you can connect with and have shared interests.

Did you always know that you wanted to work in student affairs?
I did not always know I wanted to work in student affairs. I discovered the field after I graduated form Purdue University with my bachelors. But once I discovered it was a field, I could pursue long term I was hooked.

What is the best piece of professional advice you ever received?
Fail early and fail often. It is ok to make mistakes and learn from them. It’s better that they happen early on so that you can grow and move forward as a better professional.

What is your favorite restaurant in Nashville?
Cinco De Mayo
