What do you love most about working in Vanderbilt Dean of Students?

Vanderbilt is a remarkable community composed of individuals whom are attentive, genuine, culturally sensitive, encouraging, and passionate about the work that they do. We truly work together to ensure that students have access to resources. Every decision that is made by the Dean of Students is in the best interest of our students and their well-being.

What led you to Vanderbilt?

While researching Vanderbilt, I found myself reading a document published by the Chancellor about VU’s plan to enhance cultural sensitivity and humility. I was intrigued by the hard work and dedication that went into the Chancellor’s mission. I remember thinking, “I must be a part of this movement!” I also desired to be a part of a prestigious institution that values educational and personal growth. After deciding to make a transition in my career, I was beyond thrilled to see that Vanderbilt was expanding their staff. Working at the UCC has been a very rewarding and life changing experience.

If you could give one piece of advice to a new staff member, what would it be?

I would recommend attending the various events hosted by VU. It is a great way to connect with your colleagues and students. I believe that deepening the connection with our students involves being an active member on campus. This includes supporting student events and becoming actively involved in continuous conversations/ discussion centered on improving our campus.

Did you always know that you wanted to work in student affairs?

Yes. I have always loved working with the college population. College is such a monumental time in life and students need optimal support on their journey. When asked to describe my career goals during my senior year of high school, I remember stating “I want to educate, encourage, uplift and assist with the facilitation of personal growth among individuals.”  It was during that time in my life that reinforced my desire for advocacy and enhanced my interest in mental health. After many years of hard work and dedication, I am thrilled that I have met that goal.

What is the best piece of professional advice you ever received?

Never lose your desire to learn despite the amount of years you have been in your career. Every experience provides you with the opportunity for self-exploration and professional development.”

Best way to spend a Saturday?

The perfect Saturday includes morning coffee in my sunroom, brunch with my friends, taking a long walk with my dog, and ending my night listening to good music.
