After a week off for MLK Day, this week the Curb Scholars meeting, included reflections on their trip to Woolworth on 5th. The scholars spoke about the history of the restaurant while recognizing society isn’t too far removed from when segregation was overtly and legally still in place.

The visit to Woolworth on 5th served as inspiration for the weekly writing prompt. The scholars had to develop their own definition of social practice art by identifying and researching the work of a contemporary social practice artist. The scholars discussed a very diverse group of social practice artists, including ShyBot, Yarn Graffiti, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ken Kragen, Manuel Oliver and “The Creatures” exhibit featured at the Contemporary Art Center this past summer.

Finally, scholar and University Innovation Fellow Berkeley Kendrick introduced the group to the concept of design thinking and challenged her peers to collaborate on a project for the international social and environmental focused Map the System competition.
