KREYÒL COOKING
It’s Haiti Week at Vanderbilt and our Curb Scholars joined the Latin American and Caribbean Vanderbilt Student Association and Center for Latin American Studies for cooking and Kreyòl. Everyone helped to prepare the ingredients and spice mix for Soup Joumou (a rich pumpkin soup which has come to symbolize Haitian freedom). While the Joumou cooked the scholars learned to speak a few words in Kreyol, the native language of Haiti, including “bonjou” and “bonswa” (hello) and “mèsi” (thank you). The meeting finished with a selection of traditional Haitian dishes, including pickliz (Haitian pickled vegetable relish), bannann peze (fried green plantains), d’riz cole (rice and beans), griot (fried pork), chicken in sauce and the soup. Orevwa!
